When it comes time to crown a spirit as the “best,” there’s always an argument. However, the San Francisco World Spirits Competition (SFWSC) and their team of heavyweight judges have a solid reputation in the industry. The lauded contest completed their judging last weekend; now, the votes are tallied and the winners are out.

It was quite a surprise when compiling the contenders for Rum of the Year, to see which rums didn’t make the grade.

As I only pick one rum from the 100 or so I review in a year, it comes down to the very best of the best. So a lot of excellent (and highly recommended) rums fall by the wayside.

National Rum Day may have come and gone, but there is no time like the present to enjoy the Jamaican rum ranked by Jackie Summers, a spirits industry expert based in New York, as one of the top three rums of 2020.

RUM‐BAR GOLD RUM WAS THE ONLY MASTER

Rum‐Bar Gold Rum was the only Master medallist in the Gold Rum Aged up to 7 Years flight. The rum was “fruity with lots of tropical notes, dried mango and apricot” and showcased “good complexity and depth of flavour”.

HAVING STRUGGLED TO ASCERTAIN

Having struggled to ascertain its premium credentials, rum is now coming into its own with an increase in the number of producers and expressions. As our taste test shows, quality is also on the rise.
