Sugar levels aside, the global liqueurs segment is a broad church, its lack of definition a strength in terms of creativity. But with freedom of production comes lack of quality guarantees, which can lead to questionable output. For a while, some liqueurs have been a case of “approach with caution”.
It is an inherently tricky category to pin down. Some offerings, by merit of innovation or brand equity, become bartender favourites found in haute cocktail establishments the world over.

The primary mission of Tales of the Cocktail is education, primarily via sessions and tastings. This year offered an abundance of rum-focused sessions, more than any other spirit; I’ll dive into those in a moment. Between panelists and sponsors of rum-focused events, a flock of rum luminaries descended on New Orleans for the week.

Europe is exploding with rum events in the fall and just a week after the rumfest in Athens, it was time for a few others, for example the ShowRUM in Rome, UK Rumfest in London and the German Rumfest in Berlin which is the one I headed to, but unfortunately this year, London and Berlin happened at the same time.

The Spirits Business held its annual Rum Masters last month, where an experienced panel of judges uncovered some of the category’s best expressions available on the global market. Looking across multiple categories, from Overproof to Premium, Flavoured to Agricole, with expressions from producers of all scales, the competition saw a number of rum brands awarded medals for their superior quality.

Friday’s session was tough and I contemplated whether to go for a quick run or not. The bad conscience of breaking Lent had to fight a (very mild) headache and the sudden snow. Surprise, surprise, it didn’t win the fight.
