WORTHY PARK ESTATE SCORES GOLD MEDALS IN CHINA
While Jamaican athletes were winning gold medals in Beijing, China, local rum distiller, Worthy Park Estate, was showcasing the depth of Jamaican rum, bringing home medals of their own at the annual China Wine and Spirits Awards (CWSA) competition. It’s nice to see a Jamaican rum on this list, thanks to the efforts of the island’s Worthy Park Estate Ltd rum plantation. This year’s winner is Rum-Bar Gold rum, a classic gold rum aged for a minimum of four years with a profile marked by fruit, coconut, vanilla, confectioners’ sugar — it’s a terrific mixing rum and sippable, too, on the rocks.

The 2017 San Francisco World Spirits Competition was held at the Hotel Nikko, San Francisco from April 20th through April 23rd. The 2017 Competition was another record-breaking year that featured 2,253 spirit entries from all corners of the world. Although fit to burst with flavour and flair, rum is often positioned as the underdog of the brown spirits categories. As our Rum Masters 2016 revealed, now more than ever there’s an expression to entice every palate. Year on year, The Rum Masters competition continues to grow markedly in terms of both entry numbers and diversity. Indulgent sweetness with woody sugarcane and a touch of fruitiness, just like a thick rum and raisin ice cream. Deeper, more complex flavours of a traditional rum punch then develop, with notes of spice and pimento dram, before a light, fruity finish.

Sugar levels aside, the global liqueurs segment is a broad church, its lack of definition a strength in terms of creativity.
